Why isn’t there an AudioUnit extension option for LayR?
LayR was designed from the ground up as an AudioUnit.
However during development it became clear that Apple's AU implementation on iOS is not best suited to large complex applications. LayR provides separate outputs via Inter-App-Audio and, due to the nature of it’s parallel voice processing, it uses a constant CPU load and does not benefit from multiple instances as an AudioUnit. Another factor is user interface, Apple’s AU implementation severely limits the screen space available to units, LayR would be limited to it’s iPhone UI as an AU. There is also currently what looks like a bug in iOS which can cause some hosts to freeze in a certain circumstance. If that bug is confirmed and fixed we may re-consider our decision to limit LayR to IAA & Audiobus.
Audio stutters when LayR goes to background or comes to foreground.
This should not happen but it can sometimes and, if it does, it’s often because some other process is causing the CPU to be overly busy. The cure is usually to force restart your device and or to quit other apps that are also using a lot of CPU.
To learn how to force quit apps see here . https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201330
To restart your device...
- On an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus:
Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Volume Down buttons for at least ten seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
- On an iPhone 6s and earlier, iPad, or iPod touch:
Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least ten seconds, until you see the Apple logo

Will LayR continue to be updated and bugs squashed promptly?
This is a question that comes up quite regularly so here’s the deal … The answer is big YES!
As the developer I designed LayR for myself to use live, so that alone means I don’t want any buggy software crashing on me while I’m on stage! Also I hate bugs, I find them just as annoying as you do and I squash them flat as soon as they appear ( or asap ).
As for LayR’s longevity, that depends on many factors but it is certainly the intention of Living Memory Software to continue to update and improve LayR for as long as it’s possible to do so. Bear in mind that it takes considerable effort and time and that means development can only happen while funds are available to live on, LayR’s price reflects the year of development time it took to create it and by paying that price you are contributing to it’s future!

Please note, due to the large volume of mail arriving at our inbox we’ve had to set up an autoresponse with the following text:
Living Memory Software is a very small organisation, in fact it’s just two overworked people!
We sometimes receive an overwhelming amount of mail these days and while we try to respond swiftly your posts do get prioritised:
Top priority goes to serious bug reports or problems with our software and also the press/media and we will try to get back to you asap, often within 24 hours.
Sadly lower priority has to be given to wish lists and requests for app features that are sent to our support mailbox.
If our mail load is very heavy you might not receive a reply if you are sending us a wish list. Please do not be offended in this case and know that we really do take note of all requests for new features and upgrades, they all go directly onto a list from which we pick and choose the ones we think we can implement in time.
Thank you and best regards,
Living Memory Software
If you have a suggestion for a feature please try posting to our forum instead.
